Beginners Tips

Would you like to improve your game of backgammon?

Want to impress the guys and score some points with that hot chick and play your favorite backgammon game at the same time? We are here to help you do just that. The following are tips to remember in playing backgammon. We recommend this especially for those just getting started into the backgammon game.

  1. 1: Players are allowed to redouble. This means that if your opponent doubled to two you can redouble to four once it’s your turn to roll. It’s pretty simple but you’ll be surprised how many backgammon players forget about this. Try to use this to your advantage.

  2. 2: When you have nothing to lose, constantly double. Why? Because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain! For example, you’re in a 3-match backgammon game and the score is 2-1 with you trailing behind. If you double then you win the match. If you don’t double, you’ll be forced for another game if you win. Remember-you have nothing to lose.

  3. 3: If you have a 25% and higher chance of winning backgammon, you should accept double. Why is this so? If you play 4 games and each time you doubled and drop each you lose 4 points. If you win and take 25% of the game then you’ll lose 6 points and win 2, with a net of -4. So, this evens out the game although, this tip doesn’t consider you being gammoned. If there is a significant chance you’ll be gammoned, you will most likely drop.

  4. 4: Even if it seems safer not to, remember to take risky moves. This doesn’t usually work for beginners but if you’ve seen the backgammon masters doing it and you have the guts to do them yourself, then why not?

  5. 5: Always double when it can't cost! Suppose you are down 2-0 in a match to 3. You win the next game, the Crawford game, and are now down 2-1. There is NO reason not to double on your first roll of the next game! If you lose the game, so what? Losing 4-1 and losing 3-1 are the same thing. But this way, if you WIN this game, you win the match.

  6. 6: Lastly, always remember that experience is the best teacher. Practice playing more backgammon and you’ll be surprised where this could lead you. Remember, even our local backgammon studs started somewhere.
